5th IIRA African Regional Congress 2008

The 5th African Regional Congress of the International Industrial Relations Association (IIRA) were held in Cape Town, South Africa from 26 - 28 March 2008. The Congress was hosted by the Industrial Relations Association of South Africa (IRASA) at the Graduate School of Business (GSB) of the University of Cape Town, Breakwater Campus.

The fifth IIRA African Regional Congress discussed issues relating to challenges and opportunities for realising Decent Work in Africa. For the first time in the history of IIRA the congress included a special session on public sector issues. The Public Sector in Africa is particularly important for the realisation of the Decent Work Agenda.

In spite of pressures for the down sizing of the public sector as part of economic restructuring, it continues to play a crucial role in the monitoring and implementation of the Decent Work Agenda in a large number of African countries.
